Porto & Obidos – Portugal
After Vigo, we travelled south through Portugal, following the coast, on our way to southern Spain.
Porto
We actually visited Porto as a day trip from Vigo since they are so close together, but I decided to lump it into this blog. We arrived early in the morning and spent the whole day walking around and visiting various churches and sites. Unfortunately, the downtown area was under construction so it was difficult to view some of the sites (or take photos without barriers in them).
Portugal is famous for its tiles and the train station in Porto is decorated with some amazing tile scenes. There are also many buildings covered in tiles.
Obidos
Our next stop was Obidos which is located a bit more than halfway down the length of Portugal on the coast. Obidos was a really cool medieval town with a complete surrounding wall. It is very touristy, but we enjoyed exploring the shops, tasting some of the local cherry alcohol and walking along the city walls. Unfortunately, it started pouring rain while we were there and we ended up having to move on.
Peniche
We also visited the town of Peniche which is on the coast very near to Obidos. Unfortunately, I didn’t capture any pictures of the city wall here, but we explored the dramatic coastline which had some interesting rock formations from previous volcanoes and years of erosion.
On our drive towards Lisbon area, we stopped at a nice sandy beach for lunch.
