Yeppoon, Emu Park & Rockhampton
We stopped at Emu Park / Yeppoon to visit good friends living in the area. We stayed for 2 weeks at a great caravan park just 2 blocks from the beach. The caravan park was great for kids – waterslide, playground, jumping pillow and outdoor movies.
Mulambin – Halfway between Yeppoon and Emu Park
The local beach (Mulambin) was quite interesting – particularly at low tide. The tide went way out and there were tens of thousands of solder crabs scurrying everywhere. There were also lots of little caves to explore.
We took a walk one day up to the top of the hill you see in the first photo above and got a beautiful view over this beach, Kepple Islands and Yeppoon (video below).
Yeppoon
The waterfront at Yeppoon was destroyed a few years ago by a cyclone. They received several million dollars to rebuild. They did a great job! They put in the Yeppoon Lagoon, a foreshore walk, some water fountains (Kepple Kracken) which were unfortunately under repair while we were there, but it made for a very nice beachfront area.
Yeppoon also had a really cool Shell Museum. I’ve never seen anything like it before! They had thousands of shells that have been donated to the museum from all over the world. They had them categorized by type in neat displays. (I have to say that I’m really getting into discovering these small town museums – they really have some amazing things in them!)
Emu Park
Emu Park is a cute little town south of Yeppoon. It has a really great war memorial (which I thought I took photos of, but turns out I didn’t!?) and a great little sculpture called the “Singing Ship” because of the noise it makes as the wind blows throught the wires and holes.
Pineapples
This area is known for its pineapples. There is a farmer’s stand near Emu Park that sells $1 and $2 pineapples. YUM! We ended up going there a couple of times as the pineapples were so delicious! (Our daughter really looked after the first pineapple we bought – dressed up its hair, put it down for a nap, etc. Needless to say she wasn’t impressed when I told her I couldn’t wait to dissect the pineapple and eat its insides…)
Rockhampton
One day we decided to go into Rockhampton and do some shopping and exploring. The city has a really nice old centre along the river with beautiful art deco buildings. It’s got a great little walkway along with river complete with fountains and music! The music even plays at this fantastic little playground that we stopped in for a while (the kids dubbed it the Ewok playground for obvious reasons…)
And I’ll leave you with a picture of my now favourite shop in Rockhampton…. Bob’s Bulk Booze (with drive-through coffee!??) I love their thinking – combining 2 of my favourite things! 🙂
