A Kid’s View: Indian Food

After 5 weeks in India here is a final guide to our favourite foods in India. This guide will describe the dish, show you a photo and give you the average price. Note: all foods on this list can be found in Rajasthan.

1. Aloo Jeera (v)

60 – 240 Average: 160

Aloo Jeera is a boiled potato dish that was usually cheap. It is seasoned with a variety of herbs. We liked it because it didn’t have a curry sauce and we sometimes needed a break.

2. Aloo Paratha (v)

40- 140Average: 60

Aloo Paratha is a breakfast dish served almost everywhere in Rajasthan. It is a bread stuffed with potato and herbs. You can also get other Parathas such as the Aloo Pyaz (potato and onion) or Paneer (cheese). We liked it because of its delicious taste and cheap price.

3. Thali (v)

80 – 350 Average: 150

Thali is a mix of dishes containing Chapati (Roti Bread), Dahl (lentil curry) and usually one other dish. Depending on what size you get you may have more curries. We liked it because it was tasty and good to share with the family.

4. Chole Bhature (v)

60 – 80 Average: 60

Chole Bature is a dish commonly served for breakfast that consists of puffed bread and a chickpea curry. We liked it because it was very tasty and slightly fatty.

5. Rolls (v)

180 – 350 Average: 200

These rolls are commonly found in Delhi. You can get both vegetarian and meat rolls. Our favourite place to get them was Khan Chacha (a chain found in Delhi). I liked these because of the meat (I was struggling with chicken withdrawal in India because it was hard to find) and because they were some of the cheapest things to get in Delhi (see tip 6 below)

6. Chicken Biryani

250 – 320 Average: 280

This was my favourite meal in all of India. I only ate it once but it was so good I had to add it to this list! We ate it in Jodhpur and ate it at a Korean Restaurant.

7. Khaja (v)

20 – 30 Average: 20

Khaja is a dessert that we ate in Agra. It was deep-fried and covered in a honey sauce. It contains pistachios and other sweet fillings. Needless to say, it was an immediate hit with our family.

8. Paneer Butter Masala (v)

170 – 280 Average: 200

R’s favourite dish because it had Paneer and had a nice curry! He ate it almost everywhere. It is a butter curry contain large chunks of Paneer (cheese).

9. Dosa

80 – 360 Average: 200

A Dosa is a southern India dish, however you can find it all over India. It is like a crepe, but it comes with curries and sometimes comes filled. These can be sometimes greasy, but we liked them because they made a nice light lunch.

10. Butter Chicken

240 – 350 Average: 300

Butter Chicken is a butter curry with chunks of chicken inside it. We liked it because of it’s succulent pieces of chicken and mouth-watering curry.

A few more tips…

  1. India is a country that has mostly vegetarian people. This means that you have to take caution when eating meat dishes because they may not be fresh. Most places however we found to be quite ok.
  2. We bought some hand sanitiser while in India and sanitised our hands before each meal. This is to minimise the risk of illness later.
  3. Always eat with you right hand. Eating with your left is considered rude and disrespectful.
  4. Eat at places that have many locals in it. Eating at places that have no people usually ends you up on the toilet.
  5. Check Google reviews before eating at a restaurant. Make sure that they look real and valid.
  6. Delhi is really expensive to eat out. Try to find as local a place as possible!

All images in this post where taken from Google. This is because we have shockingly little photos of individual dishes.
