The Nullabor
After Kalgoorlie, it was time to say goodbye to Western Australia (*sniff*) and tackle the Nullabor Plain. The best way to describe the Nullabor is that it is a long expanse of nothingness… But that is actually the beauty of it! Most people try to get through the plain as quickly as possible, which is what we did last time, but this time we decided to spend a week crossing it. The distance depends on how you measure it, but most people will measure the distance between towns – Norseman, WA to Ceduna South Australia is 1,200 km.
As you travel the length of the Nullabor, the landscape keeps changing. At certain points, there are trees and forest, at other times desert, sometimes a plain and escarpment, and sometimes cliffs and the ocean. I think the best way to describe the Nullabor to you is just to see the photos…
Roads
Long, straight, empty roads (no, these are NOT the same photo!):
Runways
The roads are also used as the Royal Flying Doctor runways in certain places:
Animal Crossings
Animal Crossing signs along the way:
But we didn’t actually see ANY animals along the way (only roadkill).
Campfires
One of the best things about the Nullabor is that there are tons of free camping spots! (although none of them have any facilities). Usually, we were either alone or accompanied by no more than 2 other people. Since we went after April 15th, we were allowed to have campfires.
Sunsets
Beautiful sunsets and lighting:
Border Crossing
Border Village, South Australia (home of the Big Kangaroo).
Ocean Views
Near the Border Village, you are close to the sea and we had a wonderful lunch with a view.
Bunda Cliffs
One of the ‘must-do’ stops. We stayed the night here and the next morning had a pod of about 15 dolphins swimming below us and surfing the waves.
Long, flat plains for miles
Flies
Although the flies weren’t as bad here as we have had in other locations on this trip, there were still ever-present. I captured a video of R doing ‘The Fly Dance’ to shake off all the flies before getting in the car.
