Lithgow, NSW – Our First Stop
Finally, we finished all the stuff we needed to get done (see And We’re Off) and we left for Lithgow. We chose Lithgow because it seemed like a good central point between the Blue Mountains and some of the regional towns we wanted to visit.
Lithgow Caravan Park
On Friday 19th February, we pulled into the Lithgow Caravan Park. We had our choice of spots to park the caravan. We chose one with an outlook over the owners’ farm and an old railway viaduct. Each evening, the kids went down to the farm, collected acorns, apples and berries and fed them to the goats and the pony. They really loved this experience.
Blue Mountains
After the stress of the previous weeks, we decided to take a walk in the Blue Mountains. We drove back to Katoomba and did a bush walk which was full of adventure (see post A Walk in the Blue Mountains).
Other Attractions
During our week in Lithgow, we also took a day trip to Bathurst and Orange, and a visit to the Small Arms Factory Museum. Orange was really nice and I can see why everyone raves about it. The town itself has a beautiful central park and many art deco buildings. Unfortunately though, we didn’t get a chance to go to any of the wineries or have a gourmet meal. We ended up not spending any time in Bathurst, just a drive-through, but it was bigger than I expected.
Our son really loved the Small Arms Factory Museum in Lithgow. Apparently, it was one of the biggest makers of guns, ammo, etc. in Australia during the two world wars.
There were also a couple of nice lookout points in Lithgow, but the day we went it was a bit overcast.
After a week in Lithgow, it was time to say goodbye (it was sort of sad to say goodbye to the goats, but NOT the cold, rainy weather) and off we went to Dubbo.
